Aron Bautista

Natural dye ink · Angono, 1930 Rizal, Philippines

Aron Bautista was born and raised in Angono, Rizal, the "Art Capital of the Philippines," where his artistic journey began in the early 1990s. He studied Fine Arts, majoring in Studio Arts, at the University of the Philippines Diliman from 1994 to 1996. His early career was marked by figurative works, but in 2004 he shifted toward abstraction, a transition that defined his mature style. Bautista's dedication to his craft earned him recognition as a finalist in the 1994-1995 Shell National Student Competition and as a top 10 finalist in the 1995 Metrobank Painting Competition, achievements that solidified his reputation as a promising young artist.

His artistic evolution is best exemplified in series such as Epagna (2016), which features geometric patterns and curvilinear shapes rendered in minimalist, saturated colors. These works were inspired by American artists Frank Stella, Sol Lewitt, and Alex Couwenberg. Bautista also explored mixed media in his Rural Abstraction series, drawing influence from Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Gerhard Richter. More recently, In 2022 and 2023, he created geometric figures and abstract landscapes as homages to National Artists Arturo Luz and Ang Kiukok, blending international modernist traditions with Filipino sensibilities.

Beyond his individual practice, Bautista has actively participated in international art exchanges that broadened his creative outlook. In 2012, he joined the Neo-Angono Artists Collective as a resident artist during the Taring Padi Art Exchange program in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Four years later, in 2016, he took part in the Art Dialogo project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2024, Bautista was featured in Art Diversity, a collaborative exhibition with Indian artists at Stainless Gallery in New Delhi. The following year, in 2025, he also participated in Pagtitipon, a festival of Filipino arts held in Vienna, Austria.

These engagements not only expanded his artistic horizons but also reinforced his role as a cultural ambassador, representing Angono's vibrant art scene on the international stage.

His contributions have not gone unnoticed in his hometown. In 2012, Bautista received the Natatanging Mamamayan Award from the Municipality of Angono, honoring his excellence in art and his role in elevating the town's cultural identity. He remains an active member of the Angono Ateliers Association, continuing the tradition of collaboration and mentorship that defines the community.

Today, Aron Bautista's works are celebrated for their bold use of geometry, repetition, and abstraction, while remaining deeply rooted in the spirit of Angono. His paintings, such as Demuses Del Arcairit (2023), exemplify his ability to merge conceptual rigor with emotional resonance. As both an artist and teacher, Bautista embodies the dual role of creator and mentor, ensuring that Angono's legacy as the cradle of Philippine art continues to thrive.
