Arz Hernandez

Natural dye ink · Angono, 1930 Rizal, Philippines

Aries Hernandez grew up in Angono, the "Art Capital of the Philippines," where his early exposure to art was shaped by his father, Cesar Hernandez, himself an artist. As a child, Aries won numerous painting competitions, showing promise at a very young age. His formal training included an art workshop at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1991 under Professor Ferdinand Sena, which helped refine his skills and broaden his artistic vision. He also assisted his father in creating mural paintings and sculptures, experiences that grounded him in both traditional and large-scale art forms.

From 2001 to 2005, Hernandez focused on commissioned works for affluent families in Binangonan and Angono, producing paintings and sculptures that adorned private homes and institutions. His artistry extended beyond his hometown, with commissioned murals and sculptures for colleges, restaurants, and landmarks in Parañaque, Laguna, Quezon City, and Angono itself. These projects demonstrated his versatility and ability to adapt his style to different contexts while maintaining a strong sense of identity rooted in Filipino culture.

Since 2014, Hernandez has been actively participating in group exhibitions, showcasing his works alongside other Angono artists. His pieces often explore themes of mythology, heritage, and Filipino identity. One notable example is his oil-on-canvas painting Malakas at si Maganda (2022), which reinterprets the iconic creation myth of the Philippines. Through such works, Hernandez demonstrates his ability to blend traditional narratives with contemporary techniques, offering viewers both cultural resonance and modern aesthetic appeal.

Beyond his personal achievements, Hernandez's career reflects the communal spirit of Angono's art tradition. His involvement in public art projects and group exhibits underscores his dedication to preserving and promoting the town's artistic heritage. By contributing to murals, sculptures, and collaborative exhibitions, he ensures that art remains accessible to the public and continues to thrive as part of Angono's cultural identity.

Today, Aries Hernandez stands as a respected figure in Angono's art community. His journey from a young competition winner to a seasoned painter and sculptor highlights both his personal growth and his commitment to the collective legacy of his hometown. His works, whether commissioned or exhibited, embody the vibrancy of Filipino life and the enduring creativity of Angono.
