About the Artist
Dolpee Alcantara
Rodolfo "Dolpee" Alcantara, born on January 8, 1972 in Taytay, Rizal, is a celebrated Filipino visual artist whose innovative approach to painting has earned him recognition both locally and abroad. Growing up in the country's "Art Capital," Alcantara was immersed in a community rich with creativity and tradition. He pursued architecture at the Technological Institute of the Philippines in Quezon City, but his true calling emerged through art workshops under masters such as Larry Alcala and Orville Tiamson. Later, he refined his craft under the guidance of Nemi Miranda and Manuel Unidad, who encouraged him to develop his own distinct style.
Alcantara's career began with the Angono Junior Ateliers, where he actively participated in competitions and exhibits. His leadership qualities soon became evident, and he eventually served as president of the Angono Ateliers Association, one of the town's oldest and most respected art groups. He also worked as an in-house artist for the National Power Corporation, where he was named Artist of the Year, before deciding to dedicate himself fully to painting. Over the years, he has mounted seven solo exhibitions, including Dalas in 2018, which highlighted his mastery of stylized pointillism.
His signature style, which he calls "stylized pointillism," blends dots, cubes, and lines into vibrant compositions that depict Filipino life, rural landscapes, and universal themes of love and family. Inspired by the works of National Artist Hernando R. Ocampo, Alcantara transformed pointillism into a uniquely Filipino expression. His Mother and Child Series (2023) portrays faceless figures that symbolize nurture and duty, inviting viewers to imagine their own interpretations. In Pearl (2024), he masterfully directs the viewer's gaze toward a central pearl through waves and shells, demonstrating his ability to create powerful focal points.
Alcantara's artistry has been recognized with numerous awards, including being named Artist of the Year at the National Power Corporation, winning Resorts World's Ultimate Jeepney Design Competition, and securing first prize in the Rizal Federation Artists' Painting Competition. These accolades affirm his place among Angono's most inventive contemporary artists. Beyond his personal achievements, Alcantara continues to inspire younger generations by pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques and encouraging innovation within the community.
Today, Dolpee Alcantara stands as a vital figure in Angono's thriving art scene. His journey from a young boy experimenting with creative expression to a celebrated painter reflects the enduring spirit of his hometown. Through his stylized pointillism, he captures the essence of Filipino identity, blending tradition with modern innovation, and ensuring that Angono's legacy as the cradle of Philippine art remains vibrant and evolving.
