About the Artist

Gerry Bantang

Natural dye ink · Angono, 1930 Rizal, Philippines

Gerry Bantang is a visual artist from Angono, Rizal, the "Art Capital of the Philippines," who embodies the resilience and passion of Filipino creativity. Though he had no formal training in art, his innate talent was nurtured under the mentorship of Nemesio "Nemi" Miranda Jr., one of Angono's most respected artists. Bantang's journey took him abroad as an Overseas Filipino Worker, where he continued to practice his craft by creating sculptures and statues for hotels and artistic venues, proving that art remained central to his life even while working overseas. After retiring, he returned to the Philippines to reconnect with his first love—visual art. He has since contributed to Angono's vibrant cultural scene, including projects like the Doña Aurora Street Gallery murals inspired by Botong Francisco's works. Bantang's story reflects the enduring power of art to transcend boundaries, highlighting how passion and mentorship can shape an artist's legacy. His return to Angono marks not only a personal homecoming but also a renewed commitment to preserving and enriching the town's artistic heritage.
