Agripreneur featured Angono Ateliers Association

This collaboration is a beautiful example of how modern science can breathe new life into centuries-old traditions. When the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) joined forces with the Angono Ateliers Association Philippines, the result was a vibrant fusion of innovation and heritage.

Here is a blog post detailing this unique "Agham-azing" partnership.

Science Meets Art: The Natural Dyes Painting Project

A Collaboration between DOST-PTRI and Angono Ateliers Association

In the "Art Capital of the Philippines," color is a language. But recently, that language has taken on a greener, more scientific accent. Through a groundbreaking partnership between DOST-PTRI and the Angono Ateliers Association, artists are stepping away from synthetic tubes of paint and returning to the earth—literally.

The Intersection of Innovation and Tradition

For decades, we’ve associated "science" with laboratories and "art" with studios. This project proves they belong in the same room.

DOST-PTRI has spent years perfecting the extraction of pigments from Philippine flora. By collaborating with the seasoned masters of Angono, they’ve moved these "NatDyes" (Natural Dyes) from textiles to the canvas.

Why Natural Dyes?

  • Sustainability: Unlike synthetic paints, natural dyes are biodegradable and non-toxic.
  • Cultural Roots: The pigments are sourced from local materials like Mahogany bark, Talisay leaves, Yellow Ginger (Luyang Dilaw), and Indigo.
  • Unique Palette: Natural dyes offer a "living" color—tones that are earthy, warm, and have a depth that mimics the natural world.

The "Agham-azing" Workshop Experience

During the collaborative sessions (fittingly called Agham-azing), members of the Angono Ateliers participated in hands-on workshops. They didn't just paint; they learned the chemistry behind the colors.

  1. Extraction Science: Understanding how heat, water, and pH levels affect the intensity of the dye.
  2. The Painting Process: Experimenting with how natural pigments react to different surfaces.
  3. On-the-Spot Creation: Artists produced stunning works using only plant-based paints, proving that eco-friendly materials do not mean sacrificing vibrancy or detail.

Why This Matters for the Future

This isn't just a one-time workshop; it’s a movement toward Sustainable Art. By using natural dyes, the Angono Ateliers are setting a precedent for Filipino artists to be stewards of the environment. At the same time, DOST-PTRI finds new, creative applications for their research, helping local farmers (who provide the raw materials) and promoting Filipino science on a national stage.

A Masterpiece in Progress

The Natural Dyes Painting Project is a reminder that when we look back at our roots, we often find the best way forward. It’s a celebration of Filipino ingenuity—where the chemist and the painter work side-by-side to create a more colorful, sustainable future.
