About the Artist
Cecille Artillaga
Raised in the then-rural town of Angono, Cecille Artillaga's childhood was steeped in the beauty of nature and the creative atmosphere of the "Art Capital of the Philippines." Born in 1970, she grew up with a teacher mother and an automotive plant supervisor father, and from an early age she was captivated by the lines, colors, and forms around her. At just five years old, she began drawing rice fields, huts, and everyday scenes, often running out of pad paper in grade school because of her passion for sketching. Her teachers recognized her talent and frequently asked her to create visual aids, bulletin boards, and stage decorations, nurturing her artistic journey from the start.
Artillaga pursued formal training at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting in 1991. Soon after, she dedicated herself to teaching, serving as an art teacher and registrar at St. Martin Montessori School in Angono from 1991 to 2007. During this period, she inspired countless young talents, balancing her role as an educator with her own artistic pursuits. Eventually, she ventured into business, opening a restaurant and later a printing shop, but her heart remained with painting. After her children completed their studies, she returned to her first love and embraced life as a full-time artist.
Her artistic style is rooted in realism, characterized by clarity, vibrancy, and meticulous attention to detail. She is particularly known for her large-scale depictions of flowers and plants, which dominate the canvas with their grandeur. A notable example is Yellow Bougainvillea (2024), a mixed-media piece that highlights the beauty of one of the Philippines most beloved ornamental plants. By focusing on the hugeness of her subjects, Artillaga invites viewers to appreciate the intricacies and magnificence of nature.
Beyond painting, she has explored sculpture, costume design, and sewing, showcasing her versatility as a creative. She is also an active member of the Angono Ateliers Association, the town's oldest art organization, where she currently serves as president. Her involvement reflects her commitment not only to her personal growth but also to the preservation and promotion of Angono's artistic heritage.
Today, Cecille Artillaga's works stand as a testament to her lifelong devotion to art and nature. Her paintings capture the essence of rural life and the timeless beauty of flora, resonating with audiences who find both familiarity and wonder in her creations. As an artist, educator, and community leader, she embodies the spirit of Angono's artistic legacy, ensuring that the town's reputation as the cradle of Philippine art continues to flourish.
